Judge Kenneth Moy. A trailblazer and pioneer. A man who lived out the American Dream. A man of many firsts when it came to breaking down barriers, overcoming harsh racial, financial, and unprecedented times. Judge Kenneth Moy was the first ever elected Asian official when he won a seat on the DuPage County Board in 1984. He would win his re-election in 1988 and 1994 and served as a DuPage County Forest Preserve Commissioner as well. In 1996, Ken was elected as a Circuit Court Judge for DuPage County, again a first. He served on DuPage County’s 18th Judicial Circuit Court for 11 years before hanging up his robe in 2007 to take care of his wife, the late Patricia Moy, who had battled Alzheimer’s for many years prior.
Judge Moy’s accomplishments were beyond his civil duties, but his real achievements came after retirement. Ken created the Kenneth Moy Scholarship Fund of DuPage Foundation. This permanent endowed fund provides an annual award to a York Community High School senior who plans to pursue a career in a science-related field. Judge Moy would be recognized in 2020 and named Duke of Distinction for his career accomplishments and contributions to the Elmhurst community and DuPage County.
Judge Moy, a 40 year resident of Hinsdale, with the help of his son, Ken Moy, Jr. would later provide an annual scholarship to students attending Hinsdale Central High School. The scholarship, named after Ken Jr. and his son Caleb. He would also establish the Judge Kenneth Moy Endowed Scholarship at the University of Illinois Chicago for incoming law students.
Judge Moy found peace helping elders live out their remaining years in comfort, especially his late wife Patricia Moy. He moved her into the DuPage Care Center, DuPage County’s nursing facility for the elderly. Ken visited his late wife every day to feed her, comfort her, and love her. She could no longer talk due to Alzheimer’s ravishing her brain, but he would still be there every day. It was during those visits and witnessing residents and their interactions with staff and each other, that he was inspired to help seniors, disabled adults, and the families struggling to care for them. In 2016, Judge Moy donated $2 million to the DuPage Care Center Foundation, a philanthropic organization that secures resources to enhance and expand quality-of-life programs and services available to residents living at the facility. Soon after, the DuPage County Board voted to rename the facility the Kenneth Moy DuPage Care Center to honor its benefactor.
Through all of Judge Moy’s accomplishments, philanthropy, and milestones, his biggest achievement are both Ken Moy, Jr. and his grandson, Caleb Moy.
Dad, the crown you wore is very heavy, and I’ll gladly wear it and continue the Moy legacy. Dad, no words can ever say how blessed and grateful Caleb and myself are to have as our leader, and role model. You have truly redefined the word “father” to me and my inspiration to become the best version of myself. So, thank you father, for all that you have done, all of the tireless days, all of the sacrifices you made, you can now rest in peace, and I will continue the Moy legacy.
