Susie Marconi Obituary

Susie (Zimmerman) Marconi passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025, in Greenville, SC.  She is the beloved wife of Dino Marconi, loving mother of A.J. Zitzka, fiancé Megan Richardson, of Eagan, MN.  Cherished stepmother of Samantha Marconi, fiancé John Fitzgerald of Manhattan, IL and Nick Marconi, partner Emily Dagys of Lockport, IL.  Fond grandmother of London Zitzka, John Zitzka and Lilly Richardson.  Loving sister of Katie Zimmerman, Jane (Gary Campione) Zimmerman, Margi (Brad) Wachowiak, and Patty (Steve) Mardula.  Fond aunt to nieces and nephews: Mike Cation, Chris Moy, Carrie Moy, Becky Wachowiak, Zack Wachowiak, Meggie Wachowiak, Cathy Mardula (Jen Nykiel) and Patrick (Becca) Mardula. She is preceded in death by her first husband, John Zitzka and her parents, Paul and Marian Zimmerman.

Susie grew up in Hinsdale as the oldest of 5 sisters and graduated from Hinsdale Central in 1973.  In 1977, she received a B.S. in Finance from the University of Illinois, and it was there that she was a Bronze Tablet Scholar recipient for placing in the upper 3% of her class.  Susie continued her education by earning an M.B.A. from Benedictine University.     

Sue started with Argonne National Laboratory in 1995 as a Contracts Accountant.  Sue’s outstanding performance led to promotions to General Accounting and then to Cost Accounting where she assumed the manager role. In 2005, Sue was promoted to the financial manager of Argonne’s Advanced Photon Source directorate.  In 2008, Sue successfully completed the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business Strategic Laboratory Leadership Program.  In 2010, Sue was involved in the new energy hub led by Argonne, the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR).  The JCESR team quickly recognized Sue’s financial talents and asked her to join JCESR to provide financial support and direction in 2014.  By 2018, Sue assumed the role of Deputy Director for Operations of JCESR, becoming an integral member of the JCESR leadership team.  In 2018, the JCESR team received The Secretary of Energy Achievement Award presented by the Secretary of Energy. Sue received the 2017 University of Chicago, the Board of Governors for Argonne National Laboratory, Outstanding Service Award (the highest service award at Argonne) in recognition of decades of outstanding service. Sue retired from Argonne on May 3, 2021.

Susie was an avid University of Illinois sports fan (I-L-L-I-N-I) and a dog lover.  

A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 29 from 2PM until time of remembrance service at 7PM at Adolf & Powell Funeral Home, 7000 S. Madison St. Willowbrook, IL 60527.
