Shirley M. Schroder, 92, a life-time resident of Hinsdale, passed away on May 11, 2026, at UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale. She was born on June 30, 1933, to Edwin and Mabel Tress at Hinsdale Hospital. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, David L. Schroder, and her sister, Ruth Linker. She is survived by her daughter, Linda (Carl) Clevenger, and grandchildren Megan and Ryan; her son, Tom (Marlene) Schroder; and grandson Grant.
She spent her early years working in Chicago at Peoples Gas until she married her best friend, settled in Hinsdale, and became a homemaker, raising her two children. She also served as a secretary for United Way; volunteered with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts while her children were involved in those organizations; and enjoyed family vacations, especially trips to the Rocky Mountains and dude ranches. She spent more than two decades traveling in retirement with her late husband. Later in life, when she was blessed with grandchildren, she made it a priority to attend their sporting events, school functions, and graduations.
She enjoyed arts and crafts, painting, playing golf, tennis, bowling, and a good card game, and she was nearly unbeatable at board games. Hosting Fourth of July family reunions that gathered relatives from California, Texas, and Michigan was something everyone looked forward to. Spending time with her family, playing games, or just hanging out was her favorite place to be.
She was a woman of deep faith and Christ Church of Oak Brook served as her religious home for over five decades. She served as a Deaconess and enjoyed fellowship with friends through various Bible studies.
People will remember her for her kindness, gentle demeanor, faith, volunteerism, and unwavering support of friends and family. She lived for her children and grandchildren.
The family would like to thank her friends, caregivers, hospital and hospice staff, Downers Grove Community Adult Day Center, for their care and compassion.
A private family service is being planned through Powell Funeral Directors, and she will be laid to rest alongside her late husband and many relatives at Bronswood Cemetery, Oak Brook, IL.
Memorials may be made in her name to Downers Grove Community Adult Day Center https://www.communityadultdaycenter.org/ or the Christ Church of Oak Brook my.christchurch.us/Give/memorial-gifts
