Obituary

Phyllis H. Hogrefe (Hardy) of Hinsdale, passed away January 13, 2021, after a four-month battle with health issues at the age of 97. Phyllis was born in Willoughby, Ohio on July 7, 1923, to William J. and Ruth K. Hardy. She and her family (five siblings) relocated from New York to Hinsdale in 1940. She spent her senior year at Hinsdale Central High School, graduating with the class of 1941. She spent many years working for her father at the Chicago Stockyards. She married Louie H. Hogrefe in 1946 and had one daughter Susan C. Hogrefe (Sorce) in 1954. She and Louie were married for 46 years before he passed away at 73 in 1994. Phyllis was an avid bowler for 35 years, a reader and bridge player, a devout choir member, and volunteered for her church and many organizations such as Meals on Wheels. She was fortunate to be able to witness the birth and had many wonderful memories of her three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Phyllis will be remembered for her quick wit, sharp mind, her love of family, God and her church, playing cards, the Chicago Bulls, and watching professional golf. Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents, William J. and Ruth K. Hardy, husband Louie H. Hogrefe, sisters Mary Harriger, Carol Park, Jean Schmidt, her brother William J. Hardy, Jr., and her son-in-law Thomas J. Sorce. She is survived by her daughter Susan C. Sorce of Hinsdale, sister Joan Moseley of Springfield, Mo, grandchildren Thomas J.(Sara) Sorce, Jr., of Bexley, OH, Jason M. (Rebecca) Sorce of Glen Ellyn, IL, Cortney S. (Bryant) Gaynes of Elburn, IL and great-grandchildren, Parker, Paige, Dempsey Sorce, J.T., Kaycee Sorce, Palmer Gaynes, and many nieces and nephews. No arrangements have been made at this time due to current circumstances. A private service will take place in the later spring or summer.In lieu of flowers, a donation to the BrightFocus Foundation (brightfocus.org) for their research in macular degeneration would be appreciated.
