John Gerard Dobrez

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of John Gerard Dobrez on April 10, 2025, at the age of 66. John was a beloved husband, father, “Pap-Pap,” brother, friend and leader who brought warmth, wisdom and generosity into every part of his life. 

For over 25 years, John served as Chairman and CEO of Dober. His leadership helped shape and grow the family business, leaving an indelible mark on all who worked with him. He led with empathy, integrity and deep respect—always striving to help others find joy in both work and life. 

John loved golf, hockey, good wine, great music and bantering with friends. Most recently, he found peace in watching sunsets in Naples, FL alongside the love of his life, Tammy. 

He was a devoted husband of 42 years to Tammy; a proud father to John (Emily), Matt (Erin) and Nick (Lauren); and a cherished “Pap-Pap” to Elsie, Ada, Greta, Charlie and Bevan.  He is survived by his sister, Kathy, and brothers Tom, Dan, Scott and Chris. He was preceded in death by his brother Rick and by his parents, John and Joan Dobrez. 

His legacy lives on in the love he gave, the lives he touched and the light he brought into the world. He will be missed beyond words. 

A funeral mass will be held at St. Isaac Jogues, 4th and Clay St. Hinsdale, IL on Wednesday, May 7 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a celebration of life at Butterfield Country Club, 2800 Midwest Rd, Oak Brook, IL 60523 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All who knew and loved John are welcome to join in remembering and honoring his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to The Village Door in Homewood and the Big Shoulders Fund.
