Gwendolyn Jean Henderson (née Bodin), age 84, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2025. Born on October 9, 1941, at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, Illinois, she was the firstborn child of Alfred and Elsie Bodin.
A Life of Creativity and Adventure
Gwen spent her early years in Palos Park before moving to Worth at age 13. A graduate of Carl Sandburg High School, she possessed a lifelong passion for the arts and storytelling. This led her to pursue a certificate in Children’s Literature and maintain a daily journal throughout her entire life.
She was a woman of an adventurous spirit, always eager to explore the world. Her travels took her to Arizona, Niagara Falls, Washington state and Michigan. At the age of 59, she courageously traveled to Istanbul, Turkey, to visit her daughter—a testament to her openness to new experiences.
A Gentle Spirit
Gwen was a gifted seamstress, often found making clothes and creative Halloween costumes for her children. In the kitchen, she was known for her "Paul Bragg" healthy meals, though her family will most fondly remember her delicious pies and cookies.
Soft-spoken and easy-going, Gwen was the embodiment of kindness. She lived by the scripture, "A gentle answer turns away wrath" (Proverbs 15:1). She was a woman of deep contentment who rarely complained and found joy in the simple things. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a memorable laugh, often exclaiming her favorite phrase, “Whew, ripe!”
Faith and Family
A devoted Christian, Gwen prioritized her relationship with God through daily prayer and Bible study. she was an active member of her faith communities at Manteno Baptist Church and Grace Bible Church of Aurora.
Gwen’s greatest love was for her family. She is survived by her daughter, Dawn (Russ) Biyashev; her cherished grandchildren, Ryan, Elizabeth, and Katherine Biyashev; her brother, Terry Bodin; sister, Susan Miller; and sister-in-law, Sue Bodin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Elsie Bodin; her children, Elizabeth Henderson and Sean Henderson; and her former husband, Larry Henderson.
A private interment will be held at Fairmont Willow Hills Cemetery.
