It is with great sadness that the family of Amitava Deb announces his passing after a brief illness, on January 31, 2021. He was born in Jorhat, India, son of Sudhangsu and Leela Deb. He was the oldest of five siblings – Anuradha Sen, Anita Choudhury (deceased), Anjana Bhoumik, and Anup Deb (deceased).
He worked for 52 years as a structural engineer, including for 40 years at Sargent & Lundy. He loved to travel, visited every continent besides Antarctica, and worked in four different countries - India, England, Denmark, and of course, the US. He was an avid sportsman and prior to moving to the US in 1975 was a first division cricket player. He was a founding member of the Bengali Association of Greater Chicago (BAGC) and worked tirelessly to ensure its successful establishment in order to create a community for generations to come. In his free time, he also enjoyed gardening all summer long. Most of all, he loved his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Khona, his daughter Antara and her husband Kelvin, his son Avro and his wife Rachel and his newborn granddaughter Kirani. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends across the world.
